Clanton and Alberson Pace Magnolia State Cotton Pickin’ 100 Prelims
Over 160 Entries Take Part in Preliminary Action

Columbus, Mississippi (09/22/16) – On Friday evening over 160 race cars participated in preliminary action for 2016 edition of the Magnolia State Cotton Pickin’ 100 presented by Country Pleasin’ Sausage.

With 62 Super Late Models signed in for competition and a total of 65 entries in the division for the weekend, Shane Clanton received a $100 bonus from George Sisson, “The Outlaw, for topping Super Late Model qualifying with a 13.427 second lap. Garrett Alberson topped his group with a 13.713 second lap around the 3/8-mile oval.

Shane Clanton outdueled Billy Moyer in lapped traffic to win Super Late Model Heat Race #1 with David Breazeale outrunning a hard-charging Josh Putnam for the third and final, transfer spot.

Heat Race #2 found Florida’s Kyle Bronson setting sail at the drop of the green flag and never looking back. Chandler Petty ran 2nd early, while Billy Moyer Jr. and Morgan Bagley waged a great battle for the final transfer spot for the first half of the race before Moyer Jr. got over the cushion in turn 1 on lap 9 and slammed the wall. The lap-9 restart found Bagley taking the runner-up position, and he would finish there behind Bronson with Petty taking the final transfer spot.

Talented, young racers Austin Smith and Timothy Culp brought the field to the green flag in Heat Race #3. Austin Smith led early with Timothy Culp in the second spot. Dylan Ames overtook Kyle Beard for the third position with some contact near the race’s midway point. In the closing laps Culp and Ames caught Smith with Culp taking the lead with two laps to go on his way to the win. Culp was followed across the finish line by Smith and Ames.

Heat race #4 found Garrett Alberson dominating early before Mike Marlar and Wendell Wallace closed the gap in the final five laps. The leaders caught heavy lapped traffic with 3 circuits remaining. Marlar pressured Alberson to the checkered flag with Alberson taking the narrow win over Marlar and Wallace.

Heat race #5 found Jack Sullivan taking advantage of a Dale McDowell bobble in turns 1 and 2 on the fourth circuit to take the lead. Sullivan dominated the rest of the heat with McDowell in second. Eric Wells survived a last-lap slider from Hunter Rasdon to take the final transfer spot.

The final heat race of the night saw Georgia’s Brandon Overton wire in the field in the 15-lap affair with Chris Madden finishing in the second spot. Jesse Stovall and Super Late Model rookie, Michael Arnold had a spirited battle for the third spot early in the race before Stovall took sole possession of the final transfer spot.

Forty-eight NeSmith Chevrolet Crate Late Models entered the program and fast qualifier Scott Dedwylder won the first heat race with Tyler Burgess, Kyle Bronson, and Jeremy Shaw also scoring heat race wins.

Corinth, Mississippi’s Ronald Dunn set fast and won the first heat race with the Mississippi Street Stock Series. 15-year-old Spencer Hughes and Rodney Wing won the other two heats. Thirty-one entries took part in preliminary action for the division.

Tony Shelton took the lead from Justin Carter just before the halfway mark of the 602 Late Model Stock feature and went on to take the win with Carter and Todd Robinson completing the podium. Heat race action for the 22-car field was topped by Tony Shelton and Joey Maxwell.
